Lessons in safety and risk management

Success in Formula One is as much about risk management as it is about optimizing performance. We spend a great deal of time managing the risks inherent in our business, whether that be commercial, operational or technical.

One of the reasons the sport has become so data-centric is to enhance our ability to improve the quality of decision making and outcomes, with effective risk management and safety uppermost in our minds. The risk most closely associated with Formula One is the very personal risk associated with young drivers battling wheel to wheel at 200 mph (320 kph).

In a sport where fatalities were all too common between 1950 and 1994, the change in culture, technology and systems associated with safety has been profound. In early 2014 the sport was able to commemorate 20 years since the last driver fatality in a race. Later that same year the Bianchi tragedy served as a reminder that the risks remain, complacency our greatest enemy.
